International Roadcheck to Focus on ABS and Cargo Securement

International Roadcheck

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck is set for May 16-18, with a focus on anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement.

The 72-hour inspection spree will take place at weigh/inspection stations, designated inspection areas and along roadways. If critical violations are found, the vehicle will be restricted from operating until the violations have been corrected. Inspectors may also restrict the driver from operating if they do not have a valid operating license or show signs of impairment.

While ABS violations are not out-of-service violations, ABS play a critical role in reducing the risk of collisions by preventing the wheels from locking up or skidding. In addition, improper cargo securement poses a serious risk to drivers and other motorists by adversely affecting the vehicle’s maneuverability or by causing unsecured loads to fall. According to the CVSA, improper cargo securement accounted for 10.6 percent of all vehicle out-of-service violations discovered during the 2022 International Roadcheck.

What to Expect During Inspections

During inspection of ABS, inspectors will:

  • Determine whether ABS is required on the vehicle
  • Ensure the ABS lamp cycles on and off for all ABS required vehicles during the diagnostic check
  • Check for indications of an ABS malfunction, such as lamps remaining on during transit

During inspection of cargo securement, inspectors will:

  • Ensure spare tires, loads, cargo and dunnage are secured and prevented from falling, blowing, spilling or leaking from the vehicle, or rolling or shifting in transit
  • Confirm there are enough tiedowns for the weight and length of the items being transported
  • Check for defective securement devices (e.g., loose, torn, damaged, bent, knotted tiedowns)
  • Inspect anchor points and structures for damage
  • Verify commodity-specific cargo is secured in accordance with the regulations
