Signs Your Anti-Lock Braking System is Failing

2018 Brake Safety Week

Have you ever had to slam on your brakes as you’re driving down the road? It happens to everyone, but thanks to the anti-lock braking system (ABS), a collision was likely avoided.

ABS is modern safety feature found on many vehicles, designed to help prevent wheels from locking up during heavy braking situations and stopping the vehicle from skidding or hydroplaning.

The system is made up of the ABS module and sensors at each wheel. The sensors detect wheel speed and send a message to the ABS module to rapidly pump the brakes when it is detected that the vehicle is skidding or has lost traction. When the ABS system is not functioning properly then loss of traction, skidding and hydroplaning are far more likely to occur when braking heavily.

The ABS is typically designed to give you plenty of warning signs when there are issues with the system. Being aware of these signs and addressing the problem as soon as it arises will help ensure your ABS is working properly so you can stay safe. Here are signs to be on the lookout for:

  • Unresponsive brake pedals: If you notice the pedal requires increased effort to achieve the same amount of braking force, there might be an issue with the ABS module.
  • ABS light is on: Much like a check-engine light on your dashboard, an ABS light shines in an amber color. Sometimes the light turns on periodically to ensure it is working, but if the dash light doesn’t disappear on its own, there might be a serious problem with your ABS.
  • Brakes locking up: If your brakes are locking up under normal driving conditions, it’s time to get your ABS serviced or replaced. Look out for warning signs such as random clicking noises and/or irregular brake pumping.
