Tips for Driving at Night

Nighttime driving is always a bit difficult. Nearly 90 percent of your ability to react relies on sight. The ability to see goes down drastically in the evening. Even if you are not tired, your mind can start playing tricks on you and you may start seeing things that aren't really there.

Here are a few tips to make driving at night a little easier:

1. Look at least 12-15 seconds, or one-quarter mile ahead.
At night, drive slow enough to stop within the distance of your headlights.

2. Have proper eyewear at the ready.
If you need glasses for vision correction, make sure they have an anti-reflective coating to keep light from bouncing around. If you don't need glasses for vision correction, it's best not to wear any at night.

3. Don't stare at on-coming headlights.
If your eyes can't focus, watch the white line when on-coming traffic approaches.

4. Adjust your dashboard settings.
Dim the instrument panel and dash lights to avoid competing with your forward vision.

5. Remember to adjust your rearview equipment.
Clean and adjust truck mirrors prior to your trip and when the trailer is straight.

6. Clean your windshield to avoid residue and glare.
Polish the glass inside and out with newspaper to remove residue and decrease instances of glare.

7. Light the way.
Keep all truck lights clear of mud and dirt, and remember to keep replacement bulbs on-hand.

8. Pull over when tired.
Get a good night's rest before hitting the road. If feeling drowsy, pull over or find the nearest rest stop.
