Gearing Up for Brake Safety Day

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will hold its annual Brake Safety Day on Sept. 7, 2017, to reduce the number of crashes caused by poorly maintained braking systems on commercial motor vehicles.

Law enforcement agencies across the country will conduct inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes and brake-system/anti-lock braking system violations. Brake-related violations made up the largest percentage of all out-of-service violations during 2016’s International Roadcheck campaign.

Inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection on Brake Safety Day this year, which according to CVSA, includes examination of the following:

  • Driver’s license
  • Medical Examiner’s Certification and Skill Performance Evaluation (SPE) Certificate (if applicable)
  • Alcohol and drugs
  • Driver’s record of duty status
  • Hours of service
  • Seat belt
  • Vehicle inspection report(s)
  • Brake systems
  • Cargo securement
  • Coupling devices
  • Driveline/driveshaft
  • Exhaust systems
  • Frames
  • Fuel systems
  • Lighting devices (headlamps, tail lamps, stop lamps, turn signals, lamps/flags on projecting loads)
  • Steering mechanisms
  • Suspensions
  • Tires
  • Van and open-top trailer bodies
  • Wheels, rims, hubs
  • Windshield wipers
